Weekly Cleaning Challenge | Clean Your Knives

Shortly after my husband and I moved in together, we got a set of knives as a gift. I was instantly in love.  They were sharp.  They were beautiful.  I wanted to keep them beautiful forever.  I hand washed each knife after use and never let them go into the dishwasher.  They remained perfect for the first few years.

After a while my husband got tired of hand washing the knives.  He began to think I was a little crazy about babying them.  That is why I often find our lovely knives in the dishwasher.  That is also why they have little specks of rust down each side.

Did you know that stainless steel is not actually stainless?  Most stainless steel is made with some iron.  Therefore, it can rust.  Knives can rust from the citric acids from food or even standing water from sitting in the dishwasher. Do you like eating rust?  If you don’t enjoy eating tiny amounts of rust when using your knives, today’s post is for you.  It is time to clean your knives.

WEEK 9 | CLEAN YOUR KNIVES

Do you have knives, or other silverware, with rust spots?  It is time to get them clean.  Here is how you get rust spots off of your cutlery:

  1. Pour white vinegar into a tall glass.
  2. Place your cutlery into the glass.
  3. Allow the cutlery to sit for 30 minutes.
  4. Wipe each piece with a soft cloth. If rust remains, put it back into the vinegar.
  5. Hand wash and dry.
